Cabinet Dimension Chain: Opening to Finished Parts
A cabinet dimension chain records how a field opening becomes a cabinet envelope and how that envelope becomes individual parts. It prevents one assumption—such as nominal plywood thickness, door overlay, or back construction—from being subtracted twice or forgotten. The chain should be readable from opening to installed cabinet without relying on mental arithmetic at the saw.

Separate the field opening from the cabinet envelope
Record the finished opening at several heights and depths, then identify the limiting width, height, and depth. Keep wall irregularity, floor slope, adjacent appliances, door swing, and required service space outside the cabinet box dimensions. The field measurement checklist helps establish this boundary. Reassemble the arithmetic in reverse: the parts and joints should return to the approved box size, and the installed box plus fillers should return to the field allocation. Put the measured opening, cabinet allocation, actual stock thickness, construction type, hardware model, and revision on the released cut list.
