A practical plywood desk layout

A straightforward desk is a good first sheet-goods project because its parts are mostly rectangles: a top, two full-height sides, a lower shelf, and narrow stretchers that keep the frame square. This version is designed around a 29-1/4 inch finished height and a 48 inch working width. The dimensions leave room for a standard chair while keeping the large pieces simple to break down from a 4x8 sheet.

Use 3/4 inch plywood for the visible structure. If you want a lighter desk or a painted finish, choose a panel material that suits that use and check the sheet goods material library before buying. The template is a starting point, not a structural rating: add wall anchoring, thicker material, or bracing when the desk must carry unusually heavy equipment.

The side panels sit under the top, which creates the target finished height after the 3/4 inch desktop is added. The shelf is set back from the front so there is toe room, and the stretchers connect the sides while keeping the desk from racking. The 24 by 48 inch desktop is the largest rectangle, so place it first in a layout. The two side panels and lower shelf can then be nested around the remaining area. Do not estimate the sheet count from square footage alone: the remaining space may have the wrong shape, and every saw cut removes material. Cut order and assembly checks

Break down the full plywood sheet into manageable strips first, then crosscut the desktop and large panels. Cut matching side panels as a pair and label their inside faces before assembly. A shallow groove or cleat can support the lower shelf; pocket screws, confirmat screws, or glue-and-screw joinery can work when chosen for the material. Use the screw size finder to choose a practical starting point, and test the fastener in an offcut before drilling the visible parts.
